We Love You!

Of course we love to celebrate Memorial Day with family and friends with weekend long fun at BBQ’s and parties but did you know ………

Memorial Day was originally celebrated to honor military personnel who died in the Civil War (1861 – 1865). It was originally known as Decoration Day.

Over the years, the observance was widened in scope to include all American casualties of war and it became a formal national holiday in 1971 when Congress established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May, making it a federal holiday.

Many traditions are observed during this weekend ……

  • Some people wear red poppies to honor soldiers who have died.
  • Placing a coin on the graves of soldiers you visit, different coins mean different things:
  • Pennies mean you stopped by, dimes mean you served with the deceased and quarters mean you saw his or her death.
  • Volunteers across the nation place American flags on each grave site in national cemeteries.
  • Many city hosts parades and/or hold concerts.
  • The Indianapolis 500 auto race is always held over Memorial Day weekend. This is the 100th annual event.
  • It’s estimated that about 5,000 people will visit Arlington Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
  • The American flag should be hung at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day, then raised to the top of the staff.
  • Since the year 2000, all Americans are encouraged to pause for a National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 pm local time.

Americans have always fought for freedom. Memorial Day is dedicated to all those who kept the faith and fought the fight with courage.

Let us bow our heads in respect to thank and honor these glorious souls.
