Many of us will celebrate today with family and friends and share a few cervezas at home, out on the patio or at one of our favorite restaurants!
Of course I have two drink recipes to share with y’all, but first a little history about this great day.
The once-obscure holiday marking a 19th century-battle between Mexico and invading French forces, (Battle of Puebla) is now a regular celebration in the U.S.
But it was not a struggle for independence. Instead it represented a struggle against imperialism.
(Cinco de Mayo is not to be confused with Mexican Independence Day, which falls on September 16. The latter holiday was established in 1810, some 50 years before the Battle of Puebla occurred.)
Napoleon III hoped to install a monarchy in Mexico (which he was able to do for a few years before Mexico ousted the French). “The French army was considered the best army in the world at the time, and they had not been defeated in decades, So this was a real David versus Goliath situation that inspired Mexicans at home and in the U.S.”
The story line should serve as motivation in civil right struggles.
I hope this day provides, a link that ‘Cinco de Mayo’, reflects the reality that Mexican history is part of American history. These countries have had a shared history going back hundreds of years.
It gives us an opportunity to extend our cultural and national ties as well as our family ties!
Yep, we are all part of the Human Race!
So now a couple of my favorite drink recipes, Enjoy!!

‘Salute’

INGREDIENTS

5 cups ice
1 cup Tequila
½ cup Grand Marnier
5 limes, more for garnish
1 orange
1 cup simple syrup
6 beer, Corona
â…“ cup coarse salt or sugar (add a little food color to make it pop)

1. Place 5 limes and 1 orange–which should be at room temperature–on the counter and roll them with your hand, back and forth, while applying pressure. You don’t want to break them open, do it semi-gently. They’ll feel like a sem-filled water balloon when ready. This way the citrus will yield more liquid when you juice them.


2. Juice the limes and the orange in a large measuring cup, then add in 1 cup of tequila, 1/2 cup of grand marnier, and simple syrup. Mix together.

3. Pour 1/3 cup of coarse salt into a shallow bowl. Using one of the juiced limes, swipe the outer rim of one of your glasses. Swivel the glass upside down in the salt until the rim is covered. Repeat for each glass. (Salt or sugar for Margarita with Lime)

4. Add a heaping cup of ice to the blender and just enough of the margarita mixture that the ice is not covered. Blend, adding more ice or margarita mix until the desired thickness is achieved.

5. Pour the frozen margarita into a salt-rimmed glass, pop open a Corona and place it upside down in the glass, submerging it into the margarita.

Clementine-Jalapeño Margarita…..Oh MY!

Ingredients

2 ounces tequila reposado
2 ounces fresh clementine juice (That’s the juice from about 2 clementines)
1 ounce fresh lime juice
1 teaspoon chopped jalapeño
½ teaspoon honey or agave
For garnish: (optional)
Flaky sea salt
Thinly sliced jalapeño rounds
Lime or clementine round

1. Moisten the rim of your glass with a lime wedge and dip the rim in salt. (optional, but I recommend it.)
2. Place all of the ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain over ice into your rimmed cocktail glass.
3. Garnish with jalapeño rounds and a lime/clementine round if you’re feeling fancy           4. Ahhhhhh, sit back & enjoy. ( Now make another!)
