So today I am diverting from my regular Wednesday blog to share National Scrabble Day! Oh my,  what fun …..

Of course National Scrabble Day an unofficial national holiday, is celebrated on April 13th in honor of the creator, Alfred Mosher Butts, who was born on April 13, 1899.

Did you know …..

That the game started off named Lexiko and then Criss-Cross Words before Alfred eventually settled on the name Scrabble. He was an amateur artist and unemployed architect and developed the word game in the midst of the depression. Although, it wasn’t until 1948, a final name change and trademark that Mr. Butts finally began to produce the game.

In the US, the name Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro, Inc. This game is sold in 121 countries with 29 different language versions. Worldwide, over one hundred and fifty million sets have been sold.  Scrabble can be found in nearly one-third of American homes!

The word ‘scrabble’ means to ‘grope frantically’

In 1984 Scrabble became a daytime game show on NBC

Scrabble was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2004

Some cities sponsor Scrabble tournaments around this day

The words SELFIE and HASHTAG were added to the official Scrabble dictionary in 2014

‘Brailing’ or feeling the surface of the tile when your hand is in the bag is forbidden in the game

The letter ‘X’ is considered one of the hardest letters in Scrabble

Tiles with the most points (10) are Q and Z

Tiles with the least points (0) are blank tiles ……duh

There are 187,632 words on the official tournament and club word list
