Wisteria Wednesday
Remember I said I would not cut down my wisteria plant this fall …… well I have changed my mind ……
If you recall, I used a new a pair of garden gloves to trim my plant after being gone a while because this little puppy is definitely getting bigger. So while I did not get any sap on my arms or hands, my face was not as lucky …… grrrrrr
Of course being house-bound for this past week is really not such a bad thing for me. I love my home and I really love nesting, however I am a bit early to wear a Halloween mask …… oh no, wait …… it’s not a mask at all, it’s called poison and it’s from my wisteria tree.
I have had plenty of time this week to research this plant/vine/tree and have more reasons than ever to pull it all up this fall. (It will definitely take some muscle power, but that won’t stop me 💪🏼). As I mentioned before, it was already here when we moved in however, now, I am not sure why I would keep it.
I am so fortunate that Riley is not one to go around eating plants, berries, seeds, etc., but the more I think about it, why put him at risk. And for that matter, myself and my neighbor’s dogs. I love tending to plants, always have …… always will. But, there are so many plants, why keep one that is so poisonous ……
Now, for any one out there that has wisteria in their landscape and love it, don’t be offended. As I am writing, I am on the patio looking at my wisteria wishing that this pretty vine growing against my fence was not poisonous …… but, it is. So yeah, maybe I should have not scratch when I had an itch …… lesson learned for sure.
I want to be a responsible gardener. Why have something in my garden that could hurt my Riley, me or anyone else that would come in contact with it.
And right about now, some of you might be thinking …… wow, she is being so over dramatic ……
Okay, maybe just a little, but I am wise ……
Wise enough to know that the problem with poisons are only due to excessive amounts and how applied. And yes, poisons that are in some situations highly toxic can be life-saving in others. A big one that comes to mind is penicillin. And I know that of course anything in excess can become toxic, even water.
This garden girl believes in the good and the bad of nature. And I don’t know why I have something in my garden that I know can be harmful, I have way too many options.
I am not sure what I will plant in place of the wisteria, but I know it will be beautiful, bring me joy and not be poisonous. I can’t wait for Fall for so many reasons and just added another one to my list.
Blessings from me and Riley.
